Torres del Paine

Choose the sector and the kind of day first: Base Torres from the east, central-lake walks around Pudeto, Grey by road or boat, or a continuous W/O route with reserved nights.

Choose the format first

Choose a location that serves the outing

An eastern trailhead, a central road base and a boat-connected refuge require different journeys. Start from the named visit and how you return, then choose the room or trekking sector that supports it.

  1. 01
    Locate the actual base

Distinguish Las Torres/Central, Pudeto/Pehoé, the roadside Grey sector and mountain refuges. A shared place name does not make their access identical.

  2. 02
    Choose the day's commitment

Salto Grande, Mirador Cuernos, Base Torres and a Grey visit have different walking and transport needs. Keep a substantial hike separate from a scenic road circuit.

  3. 03
    Connect admission, nights and transport

CONAF/Pases Parques, Las Torres, Vertice and the purchased road or vessel service supply different components. Record what the package actually includes.

Without a circuit

Name the day before booking the room

Choose the named outing and its sector before the room: Pudeto, eastern Las Torres and road-accessible Lago Grey serve different days.

From Pudeto, compare Salto Grande alone with the Mirador Cuernos continuation: Chile Travel describes both; Aitue gives 6 km/about 2.5 hours return from Salto Grande, plus road travel/rests. It offers massif/lake views without Base Torres’s major ascent, but remains exposed to wind.

From Las Torres through Ascencio valley and final moraine, Vértice lists Central–Base Torres–Central at approximately 21 km/8–10 hours return. Fit capacity, daylight, slower walkers and a dedicated return; do not add distant viewpoints. Compare the day hikes and independent/guided needs.

Lago Grey’s road shore, separately booked navigation and W-sector Refugio Grey are distinct. A shore visit promises neither glacier-face proximity nor ice walking. Confirm vessel check-in, boarding walk and shore return; park/room/W bookings do not include it automatically.

A road/day-walking example uses seven regional days: day 1 Natales supplies; day 2 transfer to a central/southern base, Pehoé viewing if time; day 3 Salto Grande/Cuernos; day 4 arranged Sarmiento-steppe or scenic outing; day 5 Grey shore or confirmed navigation; day 6 Natales return; day 7 departure. Six nights are four at one park-area base plus two Natales; only days 3–5 are full outings.

For essential Base Torres, adapt day 4, eastern base and all transfers to the commitment. Shorter walks suit mixed stamina; boat/guide dates may be less flexible than four room nights. Shorten by removing an outing, not a travel leg; add usable recovery/weather nights or compare the five-day itinerary.

Multi-day trekking

Let each circuit's nights explain its shape

Choose continuous trekking for its consecutive loaded days and reserved nights, rather than the ambition of its name.

The classic five-day W links Base Torres, French Valley and Grey over four park nights. The eight-day O adds Serón, Dickson, Los Perros and John Gardner Pass before the southern sequence, over seven nights. These operator formats differ from shorter products’ coverage/exits. Use the W/O comparison for stages/gateway-night arithmetic and O guide for northern requirements. Confirm direction and road/boat exit; add Natales preparation/return nights.

The W guide distinguishes Refugio Grey from the roadside shore: Vértice lists Paine Grande–Grey as 11 km/4–4.5 hours each way, about 22 km/8–9 hours return before rests/boat connection. Test consecutive days with the intended load/support. One room, varied walks and scenic drives need no circuit label.

A protected landscape

Use the conditions that are actually present

Use the current park notice and actual conditions for the selected route, not a seasonal sales description.

Checked 4 October 2026: the park notice lifts W/Base Torres’ accredited-guide requirement from 16 September; microcrampons/poles may remain required. CONAF retains the O closure initially through 31 October. Consult daily trail reports and rangers.

Advertised November trips, rooms or maps prove no trail/boat access. Alternative walks/drives must also be authorized and usable. The season guide gives context, not openings.

An arranged Portería Sarmiento steppe/wildlife walk needs its own pickup; scenic drives use authorized viewpoints. Guanacos and other wildlife are possibilities: keep distance and let animals move.

Follow trail, fire/cooking and waste rules. Verges are not automatically parking, nor popular viewpoints permission for off-trail photographs.

Before Patagonia

Connect the park components

Each booking should identify a place, date, service and the onward connection. A provider's confirmation must answer those details for your chosen format.

Entry

Start with current park access

Use CONAF and Pases Parques for admission, entrances and current conditions. Laguna Amarga needs its onward eastern shuttle/transfer to Central/Las Torres; Pudeto serves central lakes and the Pehoé catamaran to Paine Grande. Road Pehoé lodging is not boat-connected Paine Grande. Lago Grey hotel/shore is not Refugio Grey; Río Serrano’s southern road base still needs eastern/Pudeto transfers. Confirm usable buses/shuttles/arranged rides, not just an entrance arrival. First choose feasible format/access, then every overnight/equipment/meal, matching entry/exit transport and remaining admission/transfers; add Natales nights and wider travel with preparation/return time.

Night

Know the accommodation owner

Las Torres serves Central, Chileno, Cuernos, Francés and Serón; Vértice serves Paine Grande, Grey, Dickson and Los Perros, as the municipal guide also distinguishes. Pitch, equipped tent and refuge bed are different purchases. Confirm meals by date, carried sleep/cooking gear, dietary needs and cross-contact separately with each provider. Road-based rooms need accessible weather layers, outing food and missing property supplies; use packing after choosing format. Confirm precise property access/meals/outing starts, carrier stops/baggage and vessel boarding/change terms even in a package. A missing critical sector means revise the route before paying, not improvise a Los Perros camp.

Exit

Read the return backward

Fit the final walk to the purchased road/lake connection, belongings collection and Natales room before wider departure. Keep dates, providers and contacts with offline confirmations; ask about local communication instead of assuming town coverage. Check assistance/insurance against the activity—lodging conveys no rescue/medical cover. Every road-based outing needs actual transport from its property; arrival/exit days are not extra full walks. Arrange fuel before entering: CONAF says none is sold in the park or surroundings. Use the rental guide; an idle car during a trek has different cost/return implications from one used for daily outings.

Fuel is not sold in the park or its surroundings according to CONAF. Arrange it before a driving visit, and keep essential confirmations and contact instructions accessible offline.

Park, sector and booking sources

Authority notices and named services

Park access and booking information were checked on 4 October 2026. Vértice’s Base Torres and Paine Grande–Grey stage estimates and Aitue’s Cuernos return estimate were checked on 5 October. These named-route benchmarks do not establish current trail access, boat operation or availability.
