Chile Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors

For a first Chile trip, choose the experience that matters most and give its region full days between transfers. Resolve entry eligibility before booking, then prepare a straightforward first arrival with a room, payment backup and working phone.

A country of distinct journeys

Prepare the first arrival before adding the next region

The first practical choice is whether to reach your room directly or change between an airport bus and city transport. Arrival time, luggage and the room's location determine which works best. The examples below explain those choices, alongside payments and Chile's separate mobile-line and handset requirements.

  1. 01
    Before booking

Check entry and transit eligibility, choose the season and route, and identify any island or activity requirements before buying inflexible travel.

  2. 02
    Before departure

Confirm the airport-to-room chain, payment and phone arrangements, baggage and any dated operational instructions.

  3. 03
    On arrival

Complete the required checks, use the confirmed transport arrangement and tell the accommodation about a material delay.

Time in each region

Choose a workable route

Choose an anchor experience, season and gateway with the region comparison, season guide and day-count guide. Santiago plus one region leaves more full days than distant arrivals. Calendar transfers, nights and arrival/departure times; late arrivals and early departures reduce visiting time. Island flights and ferry-linked drives need connection days.

Before paying, check entry requirements and the consular visa table for nationality, document, residence, purpose and transit. Refer paid activity, longer stays or unusual documents to the authority. For Rapa Nui, resolve category, dates and eligible lodging before purchase, then complete records requiring issued bookings. Confirm special-activity access and participation with the destination, park or operator.

Enter quoted room nights, long-distance travel, airport/local transfers and activities in the budget worksheet, recording currency and inclusions; leave unknowns open. Chile uses CLP, the Chilean peso (tourism authority); spell out the currency beside dollar signs.

Check the room's address, arrival window, cancellation and late-entry procedure before reserving. Obtain access instructions for delays or no phone service; the Santiago accommodation guide helps with location.

Before San Pedro outings, Patagonian travel or ferry-linked roads, arrange communication and assistance beyond coverage. Registration or national coverage claims do not establish reception at a hotel, trail or stop. Agree check-in times and a missed-check-in response.

Door-to-door planning

Reach your first room

At Santiago's SCL airport, complete entry checks, retain the arrival record securely, collect bags and present the declaration. Follow SAG's instructions, signs and staff. Nuevo Pudahuel identifies official transport counters after SAG and Customs; verify queues, fares and departures.

An official taxi or transfer can reach the room with fewer luggage changes. Confirm address, price, party/baggage capacity, pickup and payment. Verify the vehicle and handoff for late arrivals, young families or step-free assistance.

Centropuerto lists airport–Intermodal Pajaritos journeys. Check boarding, departures, luggage, payment and the onward service or walk. Red identifies 555 to Pajaritos/Metro Line 1, 444 to La Cisterna/Line 2, and Bip purchase/recharge machines in airport terminals and Intermodal Aeropuerto. Verify current boarding/shuttle arrangements, operation, payment and connections.

Compare all three transport chains for arrival hour, bags, address and total cost, including the final leg and room access. Report delays to the property or next operator. For onward flights, ask carriers about bags, terminals and missed connections; separate bookings are not guaranteed connections.

Practical habits

Connect your phone

Check your phone model, unlocked status, SIM format, network support and visitor activation. Confirm home roaming's Chile allowance and data/call/text charges. For a travel eSIM, check compatibility, installation instructions and voice/texts versus data-only service. SIM format does not identify a Chilean line versus roaming; Chilean SIMs/local eSIMs add registration checks. Confirm account verification, home-number access and charges. Plan Wi-Fi access points and offline addresses/contacts.

From 20 August 2026, SUBTEL requires prepaid identity validation for activation and recharges using identity-card/passport information through provider-led digital or in-person processes. Confirm passport handling and where to get staffed help if activation fails.

Separately, Multibanda describes registration for foreign handsets using Chilean SIMs beyond 30 days; roaming and Wi-Fi do not require it. Confirm with the provider or authorized certifier. Line validation and handset IMEI registration differ; first-day service does not settle later requirements. Use official channels for identity/device records.

Test the room's contact channel, saved booking and calls if included; retain provider support and another contact method. Save the next map, booking and contacts. See the safety guide for emergencies or lost phones.

Compare realistic itineraries

Before you go and on arrival

Keep the first day's essentials ready

Prepare these before departure, then review the next handoff once you reach the room.

01

Offline essentials

Keep records outside one phone or bag

Save identity, approval and supporting records, the room's address and comuna, access instructions, transfer contact and reference, provider support, insurer and emergency contacts, and relevant medical records. Test them offline, share essential contacts with a companion and carry a paper address. The packing guide covers charging cables, adapters and protected storage.

02

Payments

Confirm how the first transfer and room are paid

Ask which methods are accepted, when payment is due and what the deposit covers. Check your card's international settings, withdrawal costs and support contact. Keep an eligible backup separately and arrange cash for confirmed needs; there is no universal arrival amount or guaranteed foreign-card acceptance. Retain receipts and quoted inclusions.

03

Next departure

Check the pickup and regional conditions

At the room, check the next pickup or terminal, clothing and current operator messages. Use the altitude guide before a high Atacama outing; confirm relevant weather, park, road or ferry instructions farther south. Pack the San Pedro warm layer or Puerto Varas rain shell regardless of Santiago's weather. Leave the first evening for a nearby meal and rest unless time and energy allow more.

Current requirements, operations and prices must be confirmed with the responsible authority or provider. A reservation does not establish personal entry eligibility or guarantee a connection.

Arrival and communications evidence

Use migration and consular authorities for eligibility, SAG for declarations, the airport and operators for transfers, and SUBTEL or your provider for phone registration. Phone activation, payment acceptance and current transport operation still require confirmation for your case.
