Chile's Route 7

Carretera Austral

Choose a northern fjord journey, a central lake-and-mountain route, or a southern extension. Connect the named ferry ports, give the bases full days, and plan the road back from the farthest point.

Choose the section and the return

Give the road a beginning, full days, and an exit

Hornopirén and Chaitén suit a northern forest-and-fjord journey; Coyhaique, Villa Cerro Castillo, and Puerto Río Tranquilo anchor central Aysén. Cochrane can begin a southern extension, while Tortel and Villa O’Higgins require different approaches and a separately planned return.

  1. 01
    Begin at the right gateway

Puerto Montt adds the northern ferry approach. Balmaceda brings you into central Aysén, with a vehicle or transfer agreed for the airport and the first base.

  2. 02
Keep a full day at the base

Stay near the selected forest, park, mountain, or lake objective so the activity day can begin and end in the same place.

  3. 03
    Choose the turn before extending

Put the return road stages and final gateway night into the plan before adding Tortel, Villa O’Higgins, or another side journey.

Different sections, different trips

Match the bases to the days you want outside the car

Choose your section around full days at each base and the return journey.

Over 1,200 km, the Carretera Austral links Puerto Montt–Villa O’Higgins through Pumalín forest, Queulat via Puyuhuapi and Río Tranquilo lake outings. Compare these unequal stages.

Allow separate days for Coyhaique's museum/reserve, Cerro Castillo's village/heritage or authorized mountain outing, and Río Tranquilo's lake. Futaleufú adds a river detour and return; Tortel is another branch. From road-end Villa O’Higgins, usually return north. Extend lake time or turn earlier if extending costs local days; compare north and south.

Three critical crossings

Name the ports and the operator

Three port pairs connect different parts of Route 7. Their operators, booking systems and onward road arrangements are separate.

  1. The bimodal middle

Confirm who carries each traveler, vehicle and baggage through any middle road segment.

  2. The southern return

Beyond Río Bravo, plan the reverse crossing unless a different authorized exit is separately confirmed.

From Puerto Montt, cross the Reloncaví estuary Caleta La Arena–Caleta Puelche, then drive to Hornopirén. Transportes del Estuario described arrival purchase without advance reservations on 4 October 2026. Check operation before leaving and allow a queue; no waiting time or all-weather service is promised. A pedestrian, bus or transfer booking must also cover the onward road.

Stay in Hornopirén before the confirmed sailing when useful for port and vehicle formalities. Somarco publishes Hornopirén–Leptepu by sea, Leptepu–Fiordo Largo by road, Fiordo Largo–Caleta Gonzalo by sea. Verify the dated seasonal format, departure, check-in and arrival port; pedestrians and cyclists need the middle-road transport and baggage arrangements explained. Match onward lodging to the actual arrival.

The northern sequence continues Caleta Gonzalo–Chaitén–La Junta–Puyuhuapi–Queulat–Coyhaique. A separately confirmed onward connection is needed to avoid returning through the northern crossings. Central Aysén links Coyhaique–Villa Cerro Castillo–Puerto Río Tranquilo; a Balmaceda exit retraces road and requires agreed vehicle return and airport transport.

Farther south, Puerto Bertrand–Cochrane leads either to the Tortel detour or to Puerto Yungay. Naviera Transal/Ferry Patagonia runs Puerto Yungay–Río Bravo across Fiordo Mitchell, then the road continues to Villa O’Higgins. Check its own seasonal notice and reserve the reverse crossing and a fallback overnight. A southern lake excursion or a map line toward Argentina establishes neither an authorized passenger connection nor a vehicle exit.

Published orientation, checked 5 October 2026: Chile Travel gives Coyhaique–Río Tranquilo about 240 km/five hours—roughly 480 km return before excursions. Villa O’Higgins municipal tourism gives Coyhaique–Cochrane 340 km/six hours; Cochrane–Puerto Yungay 130 km/three hours; Fiordo Mitchell about 45 minutes; Río Bravo–Villa O’Higgins 90 km/two hours. Add boarding, waiting, weather, works and stops; these exclude sightseeing and do not guarantee arrivals. Repeat the southern stages northbound and keep the lake outing on a separate day.

For every crossing, match port pair, direction, date, passenger category and vehicle to its operator; see the ferry guide.

Service and exit anchors

Let the overnight solve the next stage

Use the overnight to connect the permitted visit, services and next road stage.

Pumalín has northern Caleta Gonzalo and southern El Amarillo sectors. Choose a permitted forest route near your base with ranger advice. A ferry arrival reserves no trail/campsite; a Chaitén night separates arrival from walking.

From Puyuhuapi, visit Queulat and return to the same base. Checked 4 October 2026, Ventisquero Colgante camping remained closed from 17 April 2026 until further notice; individual trail status is separate. The Queulat guide distinguishes visits. If unavailable, keep the night and a permitted town/waterfront day.

Use MOP Los Lagos and Aysén/Vialidad for dated sectors. The 17 September 2026 report named Palena/Rosselot bridges, Fiordo Queulat–Puente Chucao, Cruce Murta–Puente El Belga and Confluencia–Puente Chacabuco for that holiday weekend—not October clearance/closure. Operators govern sailings; CONAF/park operators govern entry. Advice/maps establish no current surface, bridge or reopening and override no restriction. Shorten, stay or drop a branch before using an unverified back road.

Copec's directory lists Hornopirén, Chaitén, La Junta, Puyuhuapi, Coyhaique, Cerro Castillo, Río Tranquilo, Cochrane, Tortel and Villa O’Higgins. Check the finder for your fuel; listings guarantee no stock, repairs or groceries. Resolve vehicle issues in Coyhaique before continuing south; consult the driving guide.

Build the connected route

Put the fixed links into the plan first

Each ferry, airport handover, and road return should connect to an accommodation you can reach under the agreed arrangement.

Gateway

Confirm the vehicle or transfer endpoint

Agree collection/return at Puerto Montt, Coyhaique, Balmaceda airport or another approved point; city hire is not automatically returnable at the airport. A late Balmaceda arrival can favor a Coyhaique night. Stay locally before a guided Cerro Castillo outing rather than driving from Coyhaique before dawn; a shorter village visit can preserve another lake night. Beyond Cochrane, allow a local day before the return. Puerto Montt serves northern fjords; Balmaceda serves central Aysén. Two nights at a base leave one full activity day.

Ferry

Use the dated operator instructions

Confirm the port pair and direction, purchase or booking method, check-in process, and actual sailing format.

Return

Reserve the journey from the turn

Count reverse crossings, northbound stages and the final gateway night from the farthest base. Municipal guidance names Buses Gardy, Cochrane municipal terminal–Villa O’Higgins, recommending a Cochrane overnight after Coyhaique; confirm both dates, not an assumed daily service. A town bus needs park/rural-room connections. Fix gateways, handover and final night, then bases/full days, transport and road stages. Drop a detour before consuming that return buffer; the ten-day itinerary leaves time for forest, settlements, food and fjords.

A dated road report, ferry confirmation, and park authorization answer different questions. Verify the responsible source for each fixed part of your route.

Route and operating responsibilities

Use the source for the exact connection

Route context, ferry port pairs, road notices and park information were checked on 4 October 2026. Published road-stage estimates, Copec's station directory and the municipal southern-bus connection were checked on 5 October. These provide route scale and service locations, not live stock or departure guarantees.
