The value of a better base

Choose the ecosystem and commitment
Choose a named sector and a workable base: Pudeto in Torres del Paine, Chungará in Lauca, Los Lagos in Huerquehue, Ventisquero in Queulat or guided cultural sites on Rapa Nui. The entrance, effort and return matter as much as the park name.
A sector, a base, a return
A bus reaching a gate, a booked refuge and a vehicle at a viewpoint produce different park days. Use the sector descriptions below to choose the visit, then confirm the current authority notice and the transport from your accommodation.
Pudeto, the Las Torres approach and Refugio Grey serve different journeys. Ask where admission and transport leave you.
Walking length is only one part of the choice. Surface, exposure, altitude, toilets, boarding and the final pickup also matter.
A dated closure controls the affected route. Neither an old reopening nor an available room establishes access on your travel date. These are sector choices, not opening guarantees. Use the Paine day-hike guide, altitude guide and ferry guide where the selected visit needs their detailed planning. 01 · Patagonian steppe and granite
For a road-based visit, consider the Salto Grande area from Pudeto, with the Cuernos continuation only when conditions and the group fit. Base Torres uses the eastern Las Torres approach; the W and O have their own walking-sector nights. Choose a Puerto Natales gateway and the appropriate park-area base.
A confirmed bus, shuttle or transfer can serve a car-free visit, but it must reach the actual sector and return point.
Checked on 4 October 2026, CONAF still lists the O closed initially through 31 October, with changes announced officially. Other trails need their own current conditions check. Check CONAF Torres del Paine.

02 · High-Andean wetlands
From Putre, reach Chungará or Las Cuevas via the Arica–La Paz road, Ruta 11-CH, for high wetlands, bird observation and short walks.
Use qualified guidance and the altitude guide for this health decision. Short walks and viewpoint stops do not make the ascent suitable for everyone.
CONAF lists accessible facilities at specific sectors; ask about the approach, current condition and vehicle handoff for your needs. A park-wide label is insufficient. Verify road conditions for the arranged outing with CONAF Lauca.

03 · Forests, lakes, and active landscapes
Los Lagos offers a forest-and-lake walking choice from a Pucón stay. The park approach uses the Caburgua road and Paillaco turn; the final stretch includes gravel. Plan an actual ride back rather than assuming a bus at the entrance when the walk ends.
Use the Pucón guide to choose the walk and transport. A volcano summit is a separate specialist outing, not a continuation of this trail.
As checked on 4 October 2026, CONAF limits access to Los Lagos and lists Quinchol and San Sebastián closed until 15 December 2026. Recheck before travel. Confirm the entrance and return ride, and follow CONAF Huerquehue ticket instructions.

04 · A network along the road
Give Queulat's Ventisquero sector a full day from Puyuhuapi when that Route 7 section fits the trip. Cerro Castillo needs a different base and mountain decision; neither is a roadside stop.
A driver or arranged transfer must complete the Route 7 approach, exact entrance and return. An intercity bus through the region does not supply that outing.
Checked on 4 October 2026, CONAF's Queulat page retains the Ventisquero camping closure from 17 April until further notice. Confirm the day-sector and trail operation independently. Check CONAF Queulat.

05 · Protected cultural landscape
Ma'u Henua manages the park. From Hanga Roa, arrange transport and an accredited guide for its controlled cultural sites; park tickets and the island's separate entry requirements both apply.
Rano Raraku and Orongo have single-entry limits per ticket under the published visitor rules. Agree the sequence before adding them as casual repeat stops. Confirm group arrangements with Ma'u Henua visitor rules.
Follow the authorized paths and site rules. Do not touch or climb heritage structures, and ask the interpreter about the site's relationships and stewardship.

Turn parks into a route
Choose the base, gateway and nights before adding a second park. Fewer complete visits usually leave more time for the landscape than repeated journeys between gates.
