Four Nights in the Atacama

Spend four nights in San Pedro across five calendar days: arrive on Day 1, use Days 2–4 for three full visiting days, then transfer to Calama on Day 5. Choose named lower outings and a conditional high route.

Route logic

Put the nights into the route

The main version uses five calendar days: arrival, three full destination days and a separate departure. A four-calendar-day version needs three nights and only one conditional high outing; four full excursion days need six calendar days and five nights.

  1. 01
Day 1 is arrival; Night 1 is booked

Complete the Calama airport-to-lodging transfer and keep the evening around a town meal rather than a timed excursion.

  2. 02
    Days 2–3 offer named choices

Use admitted Valle de la Luna or arranged Tulor first, then choose Chaxa or the higher Miscanti and Miñiques route. Keep Nights 2 and 3 in San Pedro.

  3. 03
Day 4 keeps Night 4 in the base

El Tatio is conditional; a lower cultural or rest day is a complete alternative. The main airport departure is Day 5.

  1. 01
    San Pedro de Atacama

Check in on Day 1 for four nights; check out on Day 5. Arrival is one of Days 1–4.

  2. 02
Cordillera de la Sal and Tulor

Day 2 lower choices: admitted Valle de la Luna and/or separately arranged Tulor. Return for Night 2.

  3. 03
    Chaxa or Miscanti and Miñiques

Day 3 southern choice: lower salt-flat habitat or conditional high lagoons via Socaire; return for Night 3.

  4. 04
    El Tatio or lower alternative

Day 4 only if suitable and admitted; otherwise culture, town or rest. Keep Night 4 and depart for Calama on Day 5.

Days 1–2 · Settle, then explore

Start with the lower desert

Four San Pedro nights span five dates: arrival, three visiting days, departure. Compare central rooms and outlying-lodge pickups in the San Pedro guide and stay comparison.

Day one

From Calama's El Loa Airport, San Pedro is about 100 km along Route 23: Chile Travel estimates 90 minutes' driving, Transvip two hours. Confirm flight, lodging address and pickup. Shared/private vans differ from town buses, which require an airport–terminal connection (bus guide). Transfers may rule out sunset admission. Settle, eat, confirm tomorrow's pickup/ticket and stroll central streets or the plaza. Keep Night 1 in San Pedro, including late arrivals.

Day two

Tulor near Coyo, southwest of town, preserves circular adobe remains of Lickanantay farming, herding and exchange (Chile Travel). Arrange Coyo admission/interpretation as CONAF directs; otherwise choose the plaza, church exterior, a meal and rest.

Choose an admitted Valle de la Luna afternoon or just one outing. Ckari/Ckary remains closed; check the dated admission notices below. Reschedule a closed date or retain confirmed Tulor/town time. Return for dinner and Night 2; astronomy needs rest before Day 3.

Day 3 · Conditional high day

Chaxa or the high lagoons

Choose one southern outing or a lower alternative.

Toconao and Laguna Chaxa pair village history with Soncor's salt-flat habitat, below the high lagoons and El Tatio. Stay on interpretive paths: no swimming or guaranteed sightings. CONAF identifies Toconao community responsibility and Chaxa's ticket channel; confirm who buys admission. Return to San Pedro; add no higher circuit.

The alternative is Miscanti and Miñiques via Socaire, above 4,100 m, if suitable and operating. Or choose confirmed Tulor, an admitted valley visit or town/rest. Consult the altitude and health guide for the individual decision; Day 3 proves no readiness. Keep Night 3 in San Pedro. High lagoons can precede a lower Day 4; a lower Day 3 leaves more room before conditional El Tatio. Successive high outings are unnecessary.

Day 4; Day 5 departure · Very early or deliberately easier

El Tatio or a lower day

Choose the geysers or a lower fourth day; depart the following day.

Day four

El Tatio, north of San Pedro, is 1½–2 hours' driving away, according to its administrator. Confirm early pickup, return and current road/access conditions; otherwise choose lower culture or town time. Keep Night 4 in San Pedro and confirm tomorrow's ride. Entry restrictions below allow no split-party exception for excluded children.

Day five

Check out for Calama airport. Confirm Transvip's distinct lodging pickup and airline presentation times, especially for outlying lodges. A geyser return cannot guarantee a flight connection.

Make the plan resilient

Reserve the route and its alternatives

Give each outing a complete return to San Pedro and keep a lower option available if a high route does not suit.

Valley access

Check the admitted program

Checked 4 October 2026, the Valle administrator reports Ckari/Ckary closed after an earthquake safety assessment and training closures on 6, 13, 20 and 27 October. CONAF excludes Tulor from that notice; later months need checking. Vehicle access is required, bicycles have separate conditions, and foot entry is unavailable. Confirm authorized paths: Duna Mayor/Las Tres Marías listings guarantee no access. Reject a sunset program promising Ckari; follow marked paths and leave formations undisturbed.

High lagoons

Complete the Socaire check-in

Socaire requires online tickets, weather-released entry, QR confirmation and a vehicle plate: San Pedro → Socaire check-in → lagoons → San Pedro. Get the operator's entry responsibility in writing. For an unassigned rental plate, confirm the process; San Pedro is the nearest fuel location. Read the driving guide.

El Tatio

Follow the administrator's entry rules

Caspana and Toconce co-administer El Tatio. Checked 4 October 2026, the 2026 regulations exclude ages 0–8, require marked paths and prohibit touching geothermal water or fumaroles. The ticket page lists the pool unavailable. Food preparation and consumption are prohibited within the regulated site; confirm any breakfast location.

After dark

Leave room for the return and rest

Choose one confirmed astronomy program with its finish and complete lodging return established. Put it before a later lower day, rather than immediately before El Tatio. A town afternoon, meals, accommodation time or a later start remain worthwhile when the next outing would make the stay too demanding.

Reservations

Know which provider handles each entry

Confirm tickets, check-in, guiding, operating agency, vehicle, pickup, road decision, complete lodging return and cancellation/replacement terms. Coyo handles Tulor, Toconao Chaxa, Socaire the lagoons and Caspana/Toconce El Tatio; their processes differ. Entry and transport are separate unless included. Use the packing guide and keep a lower option for individual suitability.

Flight boundary

Keep the airport day separate

Confirm both lodging pickup and airline presentation times, especially for an outlying lodge. A geyser return estimate never guarantees an airport connection. Adding a coastal stop or another region requires a separate transfer day; the Atacama regional guide helps place the longer northern journey. Four days/three nights: lower Day 2, one suitable high or lower Day 3, airport Day 4; omit the second high outing and Night 2 astronomy before an early start. Six days/five nights allow four full excursion days: Day 2 near town, Day 3 Toconao/Chaxa, Day 4 suitable high lagoons, Day 5 El Tatio/lower replacement, Day 6 departure. Access, suitability and clear skies remain uncertain.
