Desert night

Stargazing in the Atacama

Begin with the southern sky by eye, then use telescopes to examine selected objects at a Solor session outside San Pedro. Give the evening time for observation and sleep afterward; ALMA and Paranal belong to separate daytime journeys.

Start with the evening you actually want

A guided night near San Pedro can connect the broad sky overhead with the smaller field seen through a telescope. SPACE's general tour starts with naked-eye orientation before telescope observing. Choose that experience for the sky itself; choose an authorized ALMA or Paranal visit to understand a research facility.

  1. 01
    Identify the booked program

Choose guided observing, a photography workshop or another specific format. Check this departure's language and participation.

  2. 02
    Protect a useful night

Put astronomy before a later lower day. Keep the evening before a pre-dawn El Tatio departure for sleep.

  3. 03
    Complete the return

Confirm the drop-off and any remaining lodging connection before meeting the outbound vehicle.

Tourism astronomy

A Solor night and a research visit have different geography

Choose an observing night near San Pedro or a separately authorized daytime research visit.

SPACE's general tour at Solor includes 2–3 hours of naked-eye orientation, telescopes, a hot drink and souvenir photo, with specified languages and seasonal starts. Private/advanced products differ in group, timing, transport and sometimes lodge/next-morning arrangements. Camera workshops have separate inclusions.

Checked 4 October 2026: ALMA's ordinary public programme was suspended. Its 2 October Science Month announcement offered 17 and 24 October events, with registration opening 9 and 19 October respectively. These require separate eligibility and registration, not an assumed seat. Organized transport leaves central San Pedro for the Operations Support Facility, not the antenna array on the approximately 5,000 m Chajnantor plateau.

Paranal public visits are registered daytime research visits about 120 km south of Antofagasta, with no visitor transport or public Residencia overnight. Check ESO's travel information and the Atacama coast journey, including roads, lodging and driving responsibility. Neither research booking substitutes for a star tour. These examples clarify formats, not endorsements or an exhaustive list.

Read the night

Choose the lunar window and read the booking terms

Choose your interest first: the Moon, bright planets, faint objects and camera instruction require different conditions and formats.

ESO identifies the Magellanic Clouds as nearby irregular dwarf galaxies visible unaided in the southern hemisphere. Ask whether season, hour, horizon, moonlight and cloud allow observing them; sightings are not guaranteed.

SPACE suspends tours for seven nights around full moon; other astronomy remains possible, with altered contrast and targets. Cloud or wind can interrupt a departed tour. Confirm the decision-maker, notification and cancellation, rescheduling or refund terms.

A complete evening

Prepare the travelers and identify the interpreter

Prepare for standing outside after sunset and ask who provides any cultural interpretation. A warm afternoon or a small group does not establish comfort or access.

Use adjustable layers, closed footwear and the format's personal equipment; the packing guide helps organize it. Keep a small return light but follow observing-light instructions, take turns and distinguish an eyepiece view from a photograph. A souvenir image promises neither a Milky Way panorama nor a particular object.

Scientific explanation and Lickanantay cultural interpretation are distinct. SPACE's general tour does not establish community-led interpretation. Ask the speaker, community or tradition and attribution; let the interpreter decide what can be shared. A broad “Andean” label does not make Indigenous accounts interchangeable.

A community-arranged Tulor visit offers a separate daytime encounter with oasis history; the San Pedro guide explains admission. If an ALMA event cannot be booked, retain the observing evening or another local outing. Compare the national stargazing formats and Elqui programmes by their complete evenings and accommodation geography.

Before booking

Reserve the whole evening

Choose the observing format, then settle participation, warmth and the complete return to your accommodation.

Format

Know what is included

Confirm this departure's language or translation, telescope equipment and turns, group participation and whether photography means a souvenir, own-camera instruction or a separate workshop with extra time and equipment. Give children's exact ages and confirm admission and transport restraints. El Tatio's separate exclusion of ages 0–8 does not establish observatory eligibility, nor does star-tour admission establish high-altitude suitability; use the health guide for that separate decision.

Comfort

Describe concrete access needs

Describe walking and standing tolerance, seating, surfaces, eyepiece access, toilets and shelter. Ask whether a participant can remain sheltered or return early; a platform photograph is not an accessibility assessment. After a lighter afternoon, return to the room for layers, check the evening message, eat and use the bathroom before meeting.

Return

Reach the actual accommodation

Use the reservation's clock and meeting instructions. SPACE's published general meeting is outside school E-26 on Calle Ignacio Carrera Pinto; private transport differs. Travel to Solor as booked—central meeting does not mean every hotel pickup—and agree the hotel or nearby drop-off and last walk/transfer before departure, especially for outlying lodging. A Solor room may be nowhere near the provider's site; compare the actual address in the San Pedro stay guide. Leave a later start or lower outing next morning. Six dates/five nights allow arrival, four full days and departure: astronomy after the first lower outing, then admitted Toconao/Chaxa, conditional high lagoons and El Tatio on separate days. Time alone establishes no altitude readiness. The four-night itinerary has three full days and Day 5 departure; Night 2 astronomy may compromise rest before Day 3 lagoons. Choose another evening or omit it; keep the night before pre-dawn El Tatio for sleep.

Provider programs and scientific-access notices were checked on 4 October 2026; specific dates, seats and operation still require the current booking channel.

Programs, facilities and the southern sky

Named astronomy operators and institutions

Program and scientific-access information was checked on 4 October 2026. SPACE's observing sequence and ESO's Magellanic Clouds explanation were checked on 5 October. Sky subjects depend on the session's season, hour and conditions; facility visits use their own dated booking channels.
