Chile Travel Budget and Money Guide

For two adults sharing a room, the Santiago–Valparaíso week below comes to about CLP835,000 for rooms, food and the listed ground transport, with roughly CLP1.03 million set aside when a possible room-tax allowance and an extra-day reserve are added. Private rooms and meals account for most of the spending; keeping the trip to two connected cities avoids a domestic flight or rental car.

What a central-Chile week can cost

Spend on the stay, keep the route simple

This is a modest private-room trip with buses between cities, public transport in Santiago and money for Valparaíso's hill-and-terminal journeys. It buys six nights for two and ordinary meals, not a luxury hotel week or a Patagonia itinerary. The biggest useful comparison is the room: adding CLP20,000 to each nightly rate adds CLP120,000 to the week, far more than the example's entire intercity-bus allowance.

  1. 01
A room shared makes a difference

Two adults share six room-nights. Solo travelers can halve some passenger and meal costs, but should not halve the room bill without a single-occupancy quote.

  2. 02
    Central Chile keeps transfers manageable

Four Santiago nights and two Valparaíso nights require one return bus journey. A third region brings another transport bill and uses time already paid for in the first two.

  3. 03
Keep enough money available for one extra day

The sample holds CLP150,000 apart from ordinary spending for an extra Santiago night, food and another airport journey. Airline changes require a separate calculation.

Where the money goes

Price rooms and transport

This example covers two adults sharing a room, 9–15 November 2026: arrival before lunch on the 9th and departure after lunch on the 15th. Santiago nights are 9–10 and 13–14 November; Valparaíso nights are 11–12 November. Return before lunch on the 13th, separating the coastal bus from departure day. Prices were checked 5 October 2026; undated tariffs do not confirm availability.

Four superior-king/private-bathroom nights at Hostal Estadio Nacional, Ñuñoa, at net CLP65,000, total CLP260,000. Two matrimonial-room nights at El Mirador de Valparaíso, Playa Ancha, at CLP43,000 including IVA, total CLP86,000. The CLP346,000 room subtotal illustrates these locations and standard, not a national average or best-room claim. Confirm Santiago's dated rate and tax.

Four one-way Centropuerto tickets at CLP2,400 total CLP9,600, reaching the city, not the rooms. Four regional-bus passenger tickets at an allowed CLP8,000 total CLP32,000. FlixBus's CLP3,999 advertised floors for Santiago–Valparaíso and Valparaíso–Santiago are not dated quotes.

Santiago transport totals CLP24,580: 24 passenger journeys at Red's CLP895 peak Metro fare plus two CLP1,550 bip! cards. Four journeys connect airport buses, four the regional terminal and sixteen city outings; lower fares may apply. CLP30,000 separately allows both coastal terminal–room trips and sightseeing for two. It is not a taxi quote; frequent rides or a different location may cost more.

Match the bus connection to the ticket's Pajaritos, Alameda or San Borja terminal. Compare Ñuñoa and Playa Ancha with your outings in the Santiago and Valparaíso guides; both still require local journeys.

Meals for two

Meals and tips

The pair's seven dates include fourteen lunches, twelve dinners, eight Santiago and four coastal person-breakfasts. Breakfast on 11 November is in Santiago before the coast transfer; on the 13th it is in Valparaíso before the return. Arrival breakfast and departure dinner are excluded.

Eight Santiago dinners cost CLP72,000 at the hostal's published CLP9,000; book at least 24 hours ahead. Ten lunches have a CLP12,000-per-person editorial allowance (CLP120,000), above the hostal's CLP9,000 lunch anchor, leaving sightseeing flexible.

Eight coastal lunches/dinners have a CLP14,000-per-person allowance (CLP112,000), matching La Casa Verde's menu prices for pastel de choclo and carne mechada. Gnocchi is CLP12,000 and seasonal fish CLP15,500; mains exclude drinks. Meals need not all be there. Four coastal breakfasts at CLP4,000 add CLP16,000 unless included in the written room quote.

Lunches/dinners total CLP304,000, plus an optional 10% (CLP30,400) for tips. SERNAC says restaurant/pub tips are voluntary; check for propina before confirming the total. Fourteen person-days of snacks/nonalcoholic drinks at CLP3,000 add CLP42,000; allow more for alcohol, desserts or longer meals.

Money held back

Keep a usable reserve

The rooms, transport, meals, optional tips and snacks above total CLP834,580 for two, about CLP59,600 per person per day over seven days. This excludes international flights, insurance, connectivity, issuer/ATM charges, shopping and paid activities. Self-guided city time is assumed; price admission, transport, meals and tastings separately for museums, tours or a wine-valley day.

Santiago's net tariff may vary with demand by up to 30%; the calculation retains CLP65,000 without an uplift. Confirm the dated payable rate. The optional CLP49,400 tax contingency applies SII's 19% IVA rate to CLP260,000. It is not a confirmed charge or cover for a higher room rate; resolve tax without assuming an exemption or counting it twice.

The separate CLP150,000 reserve rounds up a CLP137,940 extra day: CLP65,000 net room, optional CLP12,350 tax, four CLP12,000 meals (CLP48,000), CLP6,000 snacks/drinks, two CLP2,400 airport tickets (CLP4,800) and two CLP895 Metro rides (CLP1,790). It assumes simple room breakfast and replacement bus/Metro airport transport; reprice demand changes, unavailable rooms or private transfers.

CLP834,580 spending + CLP49,400 optional tax + CLP150,000 reserve = CLP1,033,980 available. Keep the reserve unspent unless needed. Airline changes, medical expenses and missed international flights remain outside it. Refunds may follow replacement payments; record refundability, deadlines and timing.

Keep the money accessible. Chile Travel confirms CLP and warns that Banco Central reference rates can differ from offered exchange rates. Confirm currency and amount: local $10.000 means ten thousand units; do not assume USD. Check each business's accepted methods/connectivity, carry manageable notes for confirmed cash needs, and keep another payment method and issuer contacts separately from a phone wallet.

Adding CLP20,000 to each of six room-nights costs CLP120,000; CLP5,000 to each of 26 lunches/dinners costs CLP130,000 before tips. Four bus-ticket savings cannot offset either. Compare simpler rooms, fewer restaurant meals or one base with the duration guide, retaining necessary transport rather than assuming luggage walks or a restful overnight bus.

Before consequential payments

Make the final price comparable

Replace each tariff calculation and editorial allowance with your dated payable quote. These checks keep the same six-night example useful without turning it into a promised package.

01

Rooms and breakfast

Confirm what the tariff includes

The hostal FAQ includes a ham-and-cheese sandwich with tea/coffee; fuller breakfast costs extra, and its terms make confirmed reservations nonrefundable. El Mirador's services page lists breakfast without tying it to the tariff. Retain the CLP16,000 coastal allowance until the written room total includes it.

02

Final tax treatment

Ask the property about your eligibility

SII guidance updated 12 June 2025 sets foreign-tourist hotel-exemption conditions including nonresident status, provider registration and foreign-currency income. A foreign passport alone does not qualify every room purchase. Obtain the final total, required documents and payment method in writing; the example's contingency is not a tax ruling or promised discount.

03

Cash access

Check the ATM and your issuer separately

Check network compatibility, the CLP withdrawal and displayed local fee; issuer withdrawal/conversion fees and credit-card cash-advance terms may also apply. Use a bank ATM calmly, shield the PIN, decline unsolicited help and confirm card return. If declined, check issuer alerts and balance before retrying. Your own terms determine fees and limits.

04

Payment choices

Review conversion and transit products

Visa says conversion offers should disclose both amounts, rate and charges and allow acceptance or refusal. Compare with issuer terms; declining does not remove all fees. A physical bip! card can be bought at Metro ticket offices; its QR app account needs ClaveÚnica. Airport and intercity tickets are separate.

05

Your quote ledger

Keep units and inclusions beside the price

Record provider, service/quote dates, currency, rooms/passengers, tax, breakfast, bags, equipment, transfers, local balances and cancellation terms. Enter a complete two-night room quote once and a per-person fare twice for this pair. Keep deposits and receipts to avoid paying twice. Record international flights in their original currency; any CLP conversion needs a dated rate source and an estimate label.

06

A different route

Price its own transport and fallback

A flight, rental or ferry adds its full passenger/vehicle price, transfers, bags, fuel, tolls and overnight consequences. A rental hold reduces card capacity separately from rent and possible excess. Match flexibility to the exposed boat, ferry or connection, then reprice the replacement and reserve for that region.
