Chile Packing List

Chile does not have one travel wardrobe. Build a small layering system around the actual regions, season, elevation, wind, rain, sun, and activities in the itinerary.

Packing for every climate

One bag, several climates

Use versatile layers and a regional checklist

Begin with clothes and equipment for the activities you actually booked, then add the protection needed for the most exposed day. Chile Travel distinguishes the sunny north, central summer/winter pattern and rainy south; none of those climate descriptions is a forecast for your departure.

  1. 01
    Everyday base

Comfortable walking clothes, a light insulating layer, sun protection, secure day storage, and footwear already tested at home.

  2. 02
    Weather shell

Add wind and rain protection suited to the most exposed part of the route, not merely the arrival city.

  3. 03
    Activity-specific kit

Use the operator or park list for trekking, camping, altitude, snow, islands, or expedition travel; ordinary city packing advice is not enough.

The core system

Build from light layers instead of bulky single-use pieces

Pack light clothes, underwear/socks for your laundry schedule, tested shoes, insulation and a shell fitting over it without restricting movement, hood or closures. Add a day bag with dry document/electronic storage, sun protection and a reusable bottle; confirm safe refills.

Keep entry documents, approvals/copies, first address, usual medication/supporting records, payments and cash accessible. Product-admission rules are separate. The first-time guide covers airport, payment and phone handoffs so essentials still reach the room if a connection or login fails.

North and elevation

Choose the day bag for the actual northern or island outing

Chile Travel describes an arid sunny north, warm central summers and cooler rainy winters. Santiago, wine valleys/coast and Rapa Nui/Juan Fernández need walking shoes, layers and sun/weather protection suited to the outing, season and indoor/outdoor or event plans.

For San Pedro/high outings, keep insulation, brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip protection and comfortable coverage accessible, plus operator-required hat/gloves. Leave room for removed layers. Clothing does not establish altitude suitability.

Rain, wind, and trails

Treat Patagonia and the lakes as active weather systems

Pack shell, insulation, spare socks and dry storage for Puerto Varas/Llanquihue, Pucón or Chiloé. Confirm rain trousers, footwear and supplied walk/boat gear; test fit, lacing and blister prevention. Before a Carretera Austral ferry, check accessible kit; vehicles or larger bags may be unavailable.

For Paine day visits, add hat/gloves and a walking bag to that wind/rain kit. Day visits, W and O need different hiking lists: camps, sleep, food/water, supplied kit and cooking.

The final packing pass

Check the itinerary line by line

Compare the finished bag with each booked carrier's allowance, the current forecast and the operator's equipment list.

01

Forecast

Check every anchor region

Recheck the season and each overnight/exposed-outing forecast—not just airport weather—then the operator's local conditions. Business trips need event clothing, tested work gear, secure meeting contacts and confirmed power, internet and call space; a Wi-Fi label is insufficient, and work permission remains an entry question. Longer stays need laundry timing/costs and medication arrangements with clinicians, authorities and carriers. Save bookings, emergency/operator contacts and a useful paper address securely offline; agree check-in and missed-message actions before uncertain reception.

02

Operator

Use the technical list

Record the operator's departure conditions, climbs/walking, after-dark return, supplied gear and required kit beside the booking. Climbing, snow/glacier, kayak, boat, dive or expedition activities need protective/flotation equipment, fit, training and participation checks. Verify stove/fuel cooking permission, supply and carrier acceptance; drones/recording also need aviation, landowner, park/site and commercial-use permissions plus battery checks. Medical/mobility kit needs handling, power and documentation arrangements; carriage does not authorize use. Chile Travel lists C/L plugs, 220 V, 50 Hz. Check appliance input and adapter load; adapters need not convert voltage. Test charger/cable together; ask manufacturers about medical, high-power or unfamiliar devices. Remove duplicate layers covered by the tested system, explicitly supplied kit and appliances with unresolved compatibility.

03

Cabin equipment

Check power banks and poles with every carrier

Confirm dimensions, weight, fare inclusions, liquids and special equipment with every carrier; one leg's acceptance covers no other. Keep permitted identity, medicine, glasses, chargers and a useful layer with you. At 4 October 2026, LATAM allowed two power banks maximum, each at most 100 Wh, under the seat—not checked/overhead—with no onboard use/charging; trekking poles were excluded from cabin. Verify current rules/fees and ratings; alert staff if gate-checking. Verify phone compatibility/activation and retain passport/IMEI records. SUBTEL's August 2026 prepaid identity rules differ from Multibanda handset registration; longer stays affect registration/recharge deadlines. Island trips need allowance, handling and local-program checks. Families should divide first-handoff essentials between adults and confirm actual stroller, child-seat, bag and vehicle arrangements; consent and seat fit are separate. Limit unnecessary food/souvenirs and declare relevant plant/animal products through SAG.

Airline baggage rules, park requirements, weather, and operator equipment lists can change. Verify them directly for the booked route and departure date.
