The complete return

Start with the sector

Choose the walk your base can support

A shorter Pudeto outing, the demanding Base Torres day and a French Valley return from Paine Grande need different access plans. Staying inside the park reduces the Natales commute but does not put every trailhead beside your room.

  1. 01
    Name the actual start

Laguna Amarga is an entry and transfer point for Base Torres. Pudeto serves the central road walks and the separate crossing to Paine Grande.

  2. 02
    Count the return walking

The French Valley day retraces the approach to Paine Grande. Walking as far as Grey from there adds a long return before any boat departure.

  3. 03
    Confirm the pickup

Choose the precise road stop, transfer or crossing in both directions. A ticket labeled Torres del Paine does not resolve the trailhead.

Road walks

Compare bases in the Paine guide. These six walks need separate access and returns, without booking the full W or O.

Base Torres: From Central, walk via Chileno and Guardería Torres to the moraine viewpoint, then descend fully. Vértice gives 21 km, eight–ten hours Central–Base Torres–Central, excluding Natales travel and local transfers. Confirm Laguna Amarga’s connection to Central/Las Torres welcome area. Bus-Sur asks returning passengers to arrive 30 minutes before the bus, separate from your hiking turnaround. Tired legs and loose descent terrain matter: without comparable uphill/downhill experience, choose a shorter walk or suitable guided plan.

Salto Grande–Mirador Cuernos: Explore Aitue gives 6 km, about 2½ hours out and back for the full walk from Salto Grande, not the waterfall alone. Shorter than Base Torres, it leaves more road-travel time. Stop at the waterfall if wind affects balance or staff close the continuation. Confirm your road pickup: the trail access, Pudeto bus stop and boat boarding are distinct; no Pehoé crossing is needed.

Playa Grey: Ruta de los Parques gives 5 km, 2½ hours for Guardería Grey → Río Pingo bridge/Puente Grey → beach, near Hotel Lago Grey. Confirm the permitted turnaround and road pickup. Sand and wind add effort; icebergs and clear views are not promised. Navigation needs a separate ticket, check-in, boarding and return; a navigation bus does not establish boat inclusion. This shore distance does not reach mountain Refugio Grey; CONAF distinguishes it from the road hotel. There is no simple land shortcut.

Stops and crossings

Bases and valleys

Natales groups meals, supplies and recovery but repeats the commute. Road-accessible park rooms still need sector transfers; Paine Grande needs arrival/departure boats. Book with the accommodation owner, official admission portal and named transport provider. Confirm stop, walk, pickup, boarding margin, accompanying guide and closure arrangements; rooms do not include them. A regular bus needs compatible stops/times; excursions may arrange different transfers. From Punta Arenas, connect to Natales before the first hiking day for rest/preparation. See the gateway comparison.

French Valley: CONAF gives Paine Grande–Italiano 7.5 km one way: 15 km return before valley ascent/descent. Retrace through Italiano to Paine Grande; continuing toward Francés/Cuernos belongs to a multi-day W. Set the permitted turnaround with staff around pace and the full return: Británico adds a longer ascent than Mirador Francés. A Paine Grande stay removes the regional commute. From Natales, reconcile bus → Pudeto boat → trail permission → return boat → bus; the full valley may not fit.

Grey arm: CONAF gives Paine Grande–Grey 11 km one way, about 22 km return, before viewpoints or suspension bridges. This leads to mountain Refugio Grey, not road-accessible Hotel Lago Grey. Choose any nearer authorized endpoint with staff on the official map, leaving the full Paine Grande return. Check both Pehoé catamaran departures and dated ticket instructions for your travel dates; the road to Pudeto and sailing are separate, and a bus cannot guarantee boat operation.

Sarmiento–Laguna Amarga: an open-terrain, point-to-point walk with opposite-entrance pickup. Chile Travel’s itinerary gives shorter eastern/central options; CONAF describes mountain sections. The April 2026 report called this walk guided and one-way. Confirm current direction, guide requirement and authorization.

A usable alternative

Plan the return

Stay together. Set the endpoint and turnaround around the slowest walker, full descent/retraced approach, pickup walk, boarding margin and trail cutoff. Shorten promptly if progress or conditions worsen. If Base Torres closes, use a permitted shore/road alternative only when its own conditions suit; otherwise stay at the base. Carry waterproof layers, insulation, food, water, medication and charged offline navigation; check required gear with staff and the packing guide. Follow rangers and authorized wildlife paths, keep distance and expect no guaranteed sighting.

A five-day, four-night example needs a car or arranged private sector transfers. Day 1: Natales, supplies, admission and transport. Day 2: Salto Grande/Cuernos if suitable, then a road-accessible Pehoé-area bed. Day 3: conditional Base Torres; return to that park bed. Day 4: Grey shore, then Natales. Day 5: depart. That is two Natales nights and two park nights. Confirm Day 3’s eastern road return before booking; Pehoé is not beside Base Torres. Use the driving guide. CONAF reports no fuel in or immediately around the park: fuel before entry. Road conditions may change the sequence.

Checked 4 October 2026: the park homepage reported lifting the Base Torres/W accredited-guide requirement from 16 September; poles and microcrampons may remain required by conditions. This does not confirm every trail’s opening or suitability. The 2026 recommendations linked an April 2026 daily report. Ask staff for current trail authorization/cutoffs: gate hours do not authorize a mountain start. Admission: Pases Parques.

The night before

Give the walk a start and a finish

The detailed comparison includes six named options, their access sectors and returns, plus a five-day example with two park nights.

Route

Choose the trail and endpoint

Decide whether the day ends at the waterfall, Cuernos, Base Torres, a Grey viewpoint or a permitted French Valley turnaround.

Transport

Confirm both directions

Reconcile the local transfer, road pickup and any boat crossing. An accommodation booking does not provide those connections automatically.

Conditions

Prepare a shorter valid day

Check current notices, required equipment and trail cutoffs. Keep a permitted lower-commitment option whose own conditions also suit the group.

Checked 4 October 2026: the Base Torres/W guide requirement was lifted from 16 September; poles and microcrampons may remain required according to conditions. Confirm each trail's current authorization.

Named routes and returns

Use current park and provider information

Park trail sections and access connections were reviewed on 4 October 2026. Published Base Torres, Cuernos and Grey-shore effort estimates were checked on 5 October and are attributed to their named starts and sources. They do not establish current trail, sailing or bus operation.
