Three valleys, one connected route

Torres del Paine W Trek

Connect Base Torres, the French Valley and Grey with confirmed nights at Central, Francés or Cuernos, Paine Grande and Grey. Choose direction and transport around the exact route you book.

Route shape
Southern traverse with valley returns
Gateway

Picture the route

Follow the southern massif and three mountain arms

The W joins the eastern towers approach, the central French Valley and the western Grey arm. Valley excursions return to their connecting trail; the overall traverse ends at a different access from the one where it began.

  1. 01
    Start at the correct end

An east-start classic enters through Laguna Amarga and reaches the Las Torres area. A west-start version commonly crosses Pehoé from Pudeto to Paine Grande.

  2. 02
    Name every night

The five-day example sleeps at Central, Francés or Cuernos, Paine Grande and Grey, then returns to Natales on day five.

  3. 03
    Choose the upper objectives

Base Torres, Mirador Francés, Británico and Grey extensions have different approach and return demands. Current access and the next stay set the limit.

Approaches and returns

Fit the hardest complete day

The southern traverse need not finish at its start; each mountain arm includes a return.

The Base Torres walk climbs from Las Torres via Chileno and Guardería Torres to the moraine, returning to Central: Vértice gives 21 km, 8–10 hours, excluding road arrival.

From Italiano, walk to Mirador Francés or higher Británico and back before continuing to the booked sector. Vértice's Británico–Paine Grande day is 21 km, 7–8 hours; confirm your Francés/Cuernos starting sector.

Paine Grande–Grey is 11 km, 4–4.5 hours each way: about 22 km, 8–9 hours return, before stops or bridge extensions. Sleeping at Grey separates the legs. Road-accessed Hotel Lago Grey is on a different lakeside.

Named owners

Match stays across two companies

Match dated stays across Las Torres and Vértice, then attach admission and transport. A complete five-day W has four park nights, not five.

Vértice's classic example, reviewed 4 October 2026, is conditional on access and confirmed stays. Day 1: Laguna Amarga entry and local transfer, Base Torres return, Central night. Day 2: along Lago Nordenskjöld to the booked Francés or Cuernos. Day 3: Italiano, permitted French Valley excursion, return and onward to Paine Grande. Day 4: Grey, with any extra viewpoint conditional on time and energy. Day 5: walk back to Paine Grande, confirmed Pehoé crossing to Pudeto and road return to Natales.

Francés and Cuernos are alternatives booked in advance, not interchangeable beds. A west-start route commonly crosses from Pudeto to Paine Grande and visits the eastern arm later; reversing a drawing does not authorize a reversed reservation chain. Confirm included valleys, Grey overnight or excursion, start and exit together.

As an eight-day, seven-night regional trip, arrive and prepare in Natales on day 1; days 2–6 follow the five walking days above, ending in Natales. Day 7 is recovery or disrupted-exit margin with another Natales night; depart day 8. That is four park and three Natales nights. Margin outside the park cannot create a spare trail bed or another attempt at a closed viewpoint.

Checked 4 October 2026

Use today's instructions for the dated route

Checked 4 October 2026: the park homepage says the accredited-guide requirement for Base Torres and the W was lifted from 16 September. It also says poles and microcrampons remain required where trail conditions make them necessary. This notice does not establish that every section or departure is open.

Use the current park instructions before purchase and again before entering. The page linked as the daily report was labeled April 2026 when checked, so its open/closed table is not evidence of October access. Ask staff for the applicable trail cutoffs and conditions instead of treating an old report as today's permission.

If a valley excursion closes, follow the authorized onward plan or instructions for returning. If the connecting trail closes, ask staff and your organizer how to manage the next reservation; do not invent a bypass or camp beside the trail. A missed Pehoé crossing needs coordination with the boat and accommodation providers, not an assumed spare bed.

Carry confirmations and the route offline, tell your contact when you expect to reconnect, and agree with companions how to respond to injury or separation. Follow ranger registration instructions and the park's heat-source rules at each site. The day-hike guide offers a different park plan if consecutive overnights no longer fit; the O Circuit guide explains the added northern commitment if they do.

Before confirming

Build the W one dated night at a time

The detailed route uses a classic five-day example and places its four park nights inside an eight-day regional visit.

Route

Write the endpoints

Write the exact endpoints, valley objectives, four stays and exit. Match complete return/transfer days and descent to recent hill experience, knees and feet; practise a long hike followed by another with your actual load, footwear and waterproof layers. A Central night does not shorten Base Torres. Entry checks and transfers precede its first-day hike: ask the organizer what a delayed arrival changes; a bed does not permit a late trail start. At an authorized pack-holding point, retain waterproofs, food, water, medication and essentials; a lighter pack does not remove mountain conditions. Use the packing guide, W or O comparison and park guide with the current briefing. Explora's separate Base Torres excursion starts at Estancia Cerro Paine and returns the same way: 22 km and 1,153 m accumulated ascent, measuring climbing rather than viewpoint altitude. Do not combine these with Vértice's measurements. Agree the French Valley's permitted upper limit and turnaround with staff; a lower viewpoint can preserve the onward margin.

Reservations

Attach every confirmation

The municipal guide assigns Central, Chileno, Cuernos, Francés and Serón to Las Torres; Paine Grande and Grey, plus the O's Dickson and Los Perros, to Vértice. W Essentials supplies only Paine Grande and Grey. Attach each owner's dated voucher even through an intermediary, plus separate park admission, transport direction, baggage, meeting points and disruption responsibility. A package includes only contracted services; identify who coordinates changes and who authorizes movement. The Las Torres help centre lists Chileno as camping, despite older refugio descriptions. Confirm each sector's pitch, equipped tent/mat/bag or bunk/bedding, check-in, breakfast, packed lunch and dinner. Practise a complete own-shelter system and wet packing if needed; vegetarian availability does not establish allergy suitability. A nearer viewpoint, Refugio Grey and a bridge extension are different objectives; glacier navigation or ice activities require separate arrangements.

Regional trip

Add Natales nights

Allow briefing, equipment, luggage and supplies before the trek, a return night and further regional margin. Put the airport/road journey from Punta Arenas before the first Natales night; a late flight may not leave time for a next-morning start. Compare the gateways. Connect the Grey–Paine Grande walk, Pehoé crossing and Natales road leg on their actual date. A traverse leaves a rental car behind: resolve retrieval, comparing buses/transfers with car rental at both ends. A same-day boat exit limits time for a Grey return excursion.

Trail permission and transport on your dates govern the usable itinerary. Future package dates do not guarantee that every planned objective will operate.

Read the providers and park notices

Route geography and access notices were reviewed on 4 October 2026; provider distance, time and ascent examples were checked on 5 October. The estimates describe named products and starts. Current park instructions govern access.
