Two hills above the working port

Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción

Climb from the port to Paseo Yugoslavo, give Baburizza time, then follow the hill streets toward murals, cafés and the viewpoints of Cerro Concepción. Plan the ascent and descent together so the best part of the day happens between them.

A walk with a beginning and an end

Give the two hills one connected walk

These neighboring hills reward a small, connected route. Begin with the port view from Cerro Alegre, then use a museum, a meal and a few viewpoints to give the walk shape. Slopes and stairs make the distance feel longer than it looks on a map. One thoughtful circuit leaves more time to notice the houses, paintings and working waterfront.

  1. 01
    Start below the hills

Use Plaza Sotomayor and nearby Plaza de la Justicia to orient yourself before the El Peral ascent. Confirm that day's lift service or choose a suitable alternative.

  2. 02
    Make Baburizza the main interior

The museum sits on Paseo Yugoslavo, directly within the first hill chapter. Visit before adding more streets if art is the day's priority.

  3. 03
    End after the second hill

Continue toward Cerro Concepción for Gervasoni, Atkinson and a meal. Keep enough time for the descent and, on a day trip, the separate journey to the bus terminal.

First chapter · Cerro Alegre

Rise from the port to Paseo Yugoslavo

Walk from Plaza Sotomayor via Plaza de la Justicia to El Peral. Take the lift to Paseo Yugoslavo when operating, or Escalera El Peral if its steps suit. Pause above the port, then visit Museo Baburizza, Paseo Yugoslavo 176. Allow around ninety minutes for the building and selected works.

  1. 01
Compare the painted port with the real one

The museum's Valparaíso collection follows the city and port from 1844 to 1970. Look for how a painter frames the water, vessels or hills, then compare that viewpoint with the city outside.

  2. 02
Choose the climb that suits the day

If the lift is unavailable and stairs are unsuitable, arrange a vehicle approach with the museum or your accommodation. Confirm the final entrance separately. An operating historic lift does not make the whole walk step-free.

Second chapter · the streets between

Let the walk make room for art and lunch

From Yugoslavo, use the mapped hill streets toward Urriola, Templeman and Pasaje Gálvez. Browse the open galleries and small businesses, stopping where the work interests you. Chile Travel's hill itinerary also includes Paseo Dimalow, above the Reina Victoria lift. Treat that as a short extension before the Concepción viewpoints, with a meal somewhere along the way.

  1. 01
Read the work that is there now

Murals can be replaced, repainted or weathered. A local guide can explain current authorship and neighborhood stories when those are your main interest. Ask about the proposed streets and finish point before joining.

  2. 02
    Keep the residential streets usable

Doorways and stairways are everyday routes for people who live here. Leave room while photographing, ask before entering or photographing private interiors, and pause in a café rather than blocking a narrow passage.

Third chapter · Cerro Concepción

See the port from Gervasoni and Atkinson

Continue through the streets around Papudo and Concepción to Paseo Gervasoni and Paseo Atkinson. Spend a little time at each view rather than hurrying between them. The ships, roofs and steep changes of level explain how closely the hills belong to the port. Atkinson also appears in Alfredo Helsby's painting in Baburizza's collection, giving the walk a useful connection back to the museum.

  1. 01
Choose a finish before your legs do

If Ascensor Concepción is operating and suits your onward journey, confirm its lower exit before descending. Otherwise, arrange a pickup at an agreed street location, or return toward the El Peral route you established earlier.

  2. 02
Give the next district another day

La Sebastiana is on a separate hill and needs its own approach. If it is the main reason for visiting Valparaíso, shorten this circuit and arrange the transfer. The two hills alone can comfortably fill the sightseeing part of a day trip.

The route on the ground

Keep the ascent, meal and return in balance

Four to six hours is a planning allowance for one museum, the hill streets and a meal. It excludes travel from Santiago and the journey between Valparaíso's terminal and the port.

01

Museum or outdoor walk

Choose the indoor anchor for your date

Baburizza currently publishes Tuesday–Sunday visiting hours. On a museum day, enter before a long lunch and leave time for the collection. On Monday, plan the viewpoints and streets as an outdoor visit or choose another date. Current exhibitions, tickets and room access belong to the museum's own visitor information.

02

Slopes and changing services

A shorter hill visit can be the better one

Lift operation needs a check on the day. Wear shoes that grip on slopes and wet steps; in rain, shorten the walking and favor a confirmed indoor visit. If steps are difficult, choose one viewpoint and the museum with a prearranged vehicle approach, verifying each entrance and the return pickup.

03

Arrival and departure

Leave time below the hills

The bus terminal is a separate journey from Plaza Sotomayor. For a Santiago day trip, save the booked terminal and return departure before setting out. Keep belongings close, navigate from a safe stopping place and use current local advice for evening streets. The Valparaíso guide connects this circuit with arrivals and overnight stays.

Stay for another morning

Give Valparaíso time beyond the first view

An overnight stay lets the next morning begin on the hills rather than at an intercity terminal. Choose accommodation by its actual approach and the evenings you want, then leave La Sebastiana or another district for a separate chapter.
