A colony in the Strait of Magellan

Isla Magdalena

A permitted visit combines a boat journey from Punta Arenas with a short guided walk among Magellanic penguins. On 15 October 2026, CONAF still lists the monument closed until further notice. Use this guide to plan the visit once reopening and a sailing are confirmed.

A wildlife visit with a clear boundary

Give the colony space

The interest lies in ordinary behavior: birds moving between water and burrows, pausing at the edge of a path or disappearing into the grass. A quiet visit gives you more to notice. Plan around the colony's permitted visiting arrangements and allow the boat day to change with conditions.

  1. 01
    Confirm access first

A seasonal excursion listing does not establish that the protected area has reopened. Resolve the current CONAF notice before committing the rest of the day.

  2. 02
    Choose the complete boat outing

Identify the departure point, town transfer, island landing and return. A Punta Arenas meeting address may be different from the embarkation point.

  3. 03
    Keep a town day available

Allow time in Punta Arenas for a canceled departure or a changed forecast. A flexible stay helps; it cannot guarantee a later sailing or landing.

Punta Arenas to the island

Know the boat day's shape

Once access is confirmed, trace the outing from your lodging to the boat and back. Ask whether the chosen service lands on Magdalena, includes viewing near Marta or follows another route. Each inclusion should have a place in the actual departure instructions.

  1. 01
    Settle the shore connection

Get the embarkation address, presentation time and return transfer in writing. If you arrange your own ride, confirm where you will be collected afterward and how a late return changes it.

  2. 02
    Treat landing as conditional

A sailing and an island landing are separate decisions. Ask how wind, sea conditions or a protected-area restriction affect the route, the price and any rescheduling. Keep the afternoon free of a tight onward connection.

On the authorized island route

Walk at the colony's pace

When open, the marked island route connects the landing area with the lighthouse landscape and the return to the boat. Follow the guide, watch the movement across the path and stop where there is room. A longer lens is more useful than trying to get closer.

  1. 01
Leave the birds a clear passage

Let penguins cross without surrounding them. Keep away from burrow entrances, stay on the marked route and follow the guide's spacing instructions. Avoid flash, feeding and sudden noise.

  2. 02
Keep the return inside the visit

CONAF describes a 1.4 km route and a maximum hour on the island. Ask the guide when to turn back; the published time includes the return. Entry requires a CONAF-certified guide.

The time around the sailing

Keep Punta Arenas in the day

After the boat, have a meal and a short walk around Plaza Muñoz Gamero in Punta Arenas. If it is cancelled, explore the plaza's architecture, a sheltered café or a museum with confirmed opening. Add a waterfront walk when the wind allows.

  1. 01
Use the next day only if it works

Ask the same operator about an agreed later departure and any price difference. Move a flexible town visit around it. Do not turn the last morning before a flight or long bus journey into a rescue attempt.

  2. 02
Choose another colony as a new trip

The king-penguin reserve on Tierra del Fuego has its own booking and road journey. It is a different species and setting, with substantial transport to arrange, rather than a quick replacement for Magdalena.

Plan your time in Punta Arenas

Before reserving

Match the outing to your party

Separate the normal season from today's access decision, then check the practical details of the particular vessel.

01

Season and status

Resolve the current closure

CONAF's page checked on 15 October 2026 says the monument is closed until further notice for winter. The same page gives a usual October–mid-April visiting season. That general season does not override the closure. Obtain current confirmation from CONAF and the operator; no reopening date is established here.

02

Boat and path

Ask about boarding and support

Describe any mobility needs before paying. Ask about steps, gangways, seating, toilets, assistance, lifejacket sizes and the landing surface. For children, confirm the operator's age rules and the full time away from town. A short island walk can still involve a much longer boat outing.

03

Clothing and belongings

Pack for an exposed shore

Bring warm layers, a wind-resistant outer layer and secure footwear. Protect your camera from spray and carry only what you can manage safely during boarding. Ask what food and water are supplied and where they may be consumed. Keep essential items with you through the shore transfer.

04

Two islands

Read the route carefully

Magdalena and Marta form Monumento Natural Los Pingüinos. CONAF prohibits landing on Marta. If a provider includes it, establish that this is permitted viewing from the boat, with the actual approach governed by the crew and wildlife rules. Do not interpret a two-island tour name as two landings.

The island's visitor arrangements

Begin with the protected-area notice

CONAF's current closure notice, normal season and visitor protocol checked on 15 October 2026. Individual operators must confirm their own vessel, departure point, inclusions and cancellation arrangements for your date.

Make the mainland stay worthwhile

Keep enough time for Punta Arenas to be part of the journey. A good town day gives a changed boat plan somewhere to land, and lets the island visit remain a considered choice when access and conditions agree.
