An island expedition, not an add-on

Give remoteness room in the itinerary

Robinson Crusoe rewards time spent understanding its native forest, protected ridges and maritime community. San Juan Bautista is the base for those different subjects; a locally interpreted forest or town walk can be as purposeful as a sea outing. Coordinate the flight, final boat transfer and lodging, then leave the order of activities flexible.

  1. 01
    Book the complete arrival

Confirm the mainland terminal, island airfield connection, boat and wharf pickup as one chain.

  2. 02
    Choose a named main outing

A ridge walk, a forest visit and a marine experience ask for different conditions and skills.

  3. 03
    Learn the local ecology

Use interpretation of habitat and conservation work without treating an endemic species as a guaranteed sighting.

Arrival chain

Base yourself in San Juan Bautista

San Juan Bautista on Robinson Crusoe is the base for lodging, meals and local coordination. Santa Clara and Alejandro Selkirk need separate transport, permissions and contingency plans.

Aerocardal markets Santiago–Juan Fernández flights from its private Santiago FBO with Cumberland sea transfers. Its 2025-season terms outline the island airfield–Bahía del Padre ground transfer and boat to Cumberland wharf; confirm current dates, fares, check-in and change conditions. Port closure or sea conditions can block arrival despite a usable airfield.

Chile Travel's June 2024 account describes sea access without a live passenger calendar. Confirm vessel, mainland port, passenger acceptance, onboard accommodation, island transfer and return; historic naval or supply voyages establish no tourist departure. Compare the whole journey and nights ashore through the ferry guide, not ticket prices alone.

The Chilean Islands overview compares the purpose of this remote stay.

Protected landscapes

Choose forest or ridge with a confirmed return

Choose a forest or ridge objective with CONAF and a local guide, according to current access and the group's ability.

CONAF lists Mirador de Selkirk: 3.5 km, strenuous; Plazoleta del Yunque: 2 km, medium; Sendero Centinela: 3.4 km, strenuous. These are named-trail lengths, excluding any additional approach or return. Winter rockfall can affect access: check CONAF/Pases Parques, required guides and registration, start/finish and total return. Agree a turnaround and report back; neither forest nor ridge is automatically an easy first walk. Hosts cannot override closures; the parks guide explains permission.

Native luma and chonta palm make the forest distinctive. Oikonos describes female firecrowns nesting in luma clearings with moss, plant material and spiderwebs. Blackberry and maqui alter native habitat; invasive-plant control and reproductive monitoring address that change. Learn from the authorized path without calls, nest approaches or following birds; a sighting is never assured. See wildlife guidance.

The Masafuera rayadito lives in Alejandro Selkirk's difficult-to-reach highlands, where community work includes nest boxes and invasive-plant control. It is archipelago context, not a Robinson Crusoe species promise: confirm the actual island, habitat and permitted route.

Living archipelago

Let local knowledge shape the sea day

Match boat, kayak, snorkel or dive routes and supervision to your skills, equipment and conditions.

CONAF lists Robinson Crusoe boat outings and Cumberland Bay kayaking; diving lies outside the terrestrial park, and land admission does not authorize marine activities. Chile Travel names Salsipuedes and Punta Lobería, without confirming depth, currents, beginner or snorkel suitability. Ask qualified operators about certified/introductory dives, supervised snorkeling, boarding-only places and embarkation/return. Wind, landing options and skipper/maritime authority govern routes; calm town water does not establish offshore conditions.

Use DAN's guidance to resolve dive profile, pre-flight interval and fitness with the qualified provider and appropriate medical advice. Wildlife encounters are uncertain; never disturb animals.

Use the University of Valparaíso's 27 January 2022 report to ask for a locally interpreted town walk. The Bienes Nacionales/municipal project names the square, cemetery, Dresden history and Fuerte Santa Bárbara; its Selkirk circuit joins park approaches, historical traces and viewpoints. The report records a heritage project and planned installation of signage; it does not certify the present condition of every marker or access to every site. Confirm the walk locally, keep private and working spaces clear, and ask permission before photographing people. The culture guide looks beyond the shipwrecked sailor.

Before committing

Build a resilient island plan

Fix the essential providers and keep the activities movable. Current service marketing is not a date-specific operating confirmation.

Access

Confirm the full chain

Confirm each handoff: mainland lodging to the exact terminal/reporting point; carrier's operating date, baggage and weather-change contact; included airfield–Bahía del Padre ground and boat legs; host pickup at Cumberland wharf. Agree meals, room changes and who pays for delayed nights, then reconfirm before leaving the mainland. Keep the onward journey changeable. A cross-island hike with luggage adds exposure and access problems and cannot replace the arrival boat. Use the domestic-flight guide and a useful Santiago buffer.

Stay

Coordinate four island nights

An example with five calendar days and four San Juan Bautista nights: day 1 completes arrival and settlement; day 2 holds one confirmed park walk; day 3 a suitable sea outing or town heritage; day 4 the other subject, forest interpretation or a rescheduled outing; day 5 returns by wharf, boat and flight, with no island night. Mainland buffers are additional. Put the best walking window early and schedule diving around departure. Day 4 allows flexibility, not guaranteed recovery; confirm movable meals/excursions, extra-night terms and mainland lodging.

Care

Prepare for protected routes

Clean footwear/equipment before travel and each protected walk; bring weather protection and essential supplies; follow current host/park biosecurity instructions. Keep equipment off sensitive vegetation and take no seeds, plants or natural material. Agree the outing's return, communication and emergency plan. The budget guide covers transfer, extra-night and payment reserves; ask about local payment methods. Compare Rapa Nui if its cultural focus and different arrival process better suit the trip.

Transport and park information was reviewed on 4 October 2026. The carrier's linked 2025 document explains arrival geography; obtain current booking terms. Trail, marine and species availability is not guaranteed.
