Fiords, forest and the northern road

Puerto Montt to Chaitén

Take six calendar days to reach Chaitén through Hornopirén and Caleta Gonzalo, with time for Pumalín's forest and a separate walking day. Five nights give the ferry journey its own space. The return to Puerto Montt or continuation south needs a booking beyond this one-way route.

Let the water set the pace

Make the crossing part of the trip

This is the northern coastal approach to the Carretera Austral. Roads carry you between shore settlements; ferries open the next stretch through fiords and temperate forest. The plan keeps arrival, navigation and a longer walk on different days, so the scenery has time to become more than a view through a windscreen.

  1. 01
    Begin with a settled arrival

Sleep in Puerto Montt before driving south. A flight delay or vehicle handover should not have to fit a same-day Hornopirén sailing.

  2. 02
    Book the constrained night

Choose confirmed Caleta Gonzalo accommodation for night 3, then match the ferry to it. Camping is a separate equipment and availability decision.

  3. 03
    Confirm the onward journey

Two Chaitén nights allow one full local day. Day 6 starts the separately arranged onward journey; a return to Puerto Montt may require additional days and nights.

Days 1–2 · Puerto Montt to Hornopirén

Reach the fiord without rushing

Use Puerto Montt to collect the vehicle and prepare for the road. The next day, follow Route 7 to La Arena, cross to Puelche and continue to Hornopirén. Keep a meal and a short waterfront walk for the end of the day.

  1. 01
Arrive and sleep in Puerto Montt

Inspect the rental, confirm ferry permission and buy food for the crossing day. If arrival is early, walk a short section of the costanera before dinner. Overnight: Puerto Montt, night 1.

  2. 02
    Cross La Arena–Puelche

Allow for the ferry queue, then drive south to Hornopirén. Settle into the lodging, find the next day's terminal and check the sailing instructions. Overnight: Hornopirén, night 2.

Days 3–4 · Caleta Gonzalo and Pumalín

Trade the boat for the forest

Make the Hornopirén crossing the main event of day 3. After the Caleta Gonzalo night, continue south through Pumalín with time for selected shorter walks before reaching Chaitén. Confirm the park's usable paths locally.

  1. 03
    Navigate to Caleta Gonzalo

Follow the booked direct or bimodal route and every intermediate handoff. On arrival, reach the accommodation and eat; add only a short shore walk if conditions permit. Overnight: Caleta Gonzalo, night 3.

  2. 04
    Walk, then reach Chaitén

Choose Los Alerces for its old trees and, if time and access allow, Lago Negro for a lakeside walk. Keep the two stops unhurried, then continue to Chaitén. Overnight: Chaitén, night 4.

Days 5–6 · A full local day and the next leg

Choose your Chaitén day

With luggage left at the same base, choose one substantial outing. Volcán Chaitén is a demanding uphill option; a shorter forest visit in the El Amarillo sector gives the day another purpose. The next morning belongs to the onward plan.

  1. 05
A volcano or a forest walk

If open, suitable and supported by conditions, make the Volcán Chaitén trail the day's main walk. Alternatively, ask about Ranita de Darwin in El Amarillo. If neither works, keep a Chaitén town-and-shore day. Overnight: Chaitén, night 5.

  2. 06
    Begin the confirmed onward journey

Depart for the next booked base or start the arranged return. There is no sixth night in this core itinerary. A sailing cancellation or an overland return changes that count; keep the necessary extra accommodation and flight margin.

Ferries, nights and the park

Make the connections agree

Use the six-day sequence only when the vehicle, two different ferry bookings or boarding arrangements, and all five nights fit the same dates.

01

The first crossing

La Arena–Puelche has a queue

Transportes del Estuario's current terms use boarding order and operational capacity. An online ticket does not reserve a particular sailing or give priority. Allow for the queue before the onward drive to Hornopirén, and follow the crew's vehicle-loading instructions.

02

The longer crossing

Confirm direct or bimodal

Somarco describes Hornopirén–Leptepu, a road transfer to Fiordo Largo, then the boat to Caleta Gonzalo. Its page also displays direct services and timetable blocks from different dates. Obtain the actual route, presentation time and vehicle/passenger reservation for your travel date. For a bimodal trip, follow the coordinated transfer rather than treating the intermediate road as sightseeing time.

03

Five nights

Keep each overnight explicit

The core count is one Puerto Montt night, one Hornopirén night, one Caleta Gonzalo night and two Chaitén nights. Confirm lodging before committing to the ferry. CONAF currently describes park camping as first come, first served; do not treat a named campsite as a reserved bed. Carry the right equipment if camping is your chosen plan.

04

Walking choices

Choose a path for the conditions

Ruta de los Parques lists Los Alerces at about 40 minutes and Lago Negro at about 30 minutes; Volcán Chaitén is a separate medium-to-high difficulty outing of about four hours. Those are published estimates, not personal walking times. Its current page lists Cascadas Escondidas and Michimahuida closed for 2025–26 maintenance. Recheck the selected trail with CONAF and respect any closure.

05

Fuel, food and return

Prepare before leaving a town

Refuel and carry the next booking, route and contacts offline. Bring rain protection and food for the navigation day; ask the operator about onboard services rather than depending on them. Confirm road conditions, daylight arrival and your rental's return location. A Chaitén–Puerto Montt sea route, a drive back through Hornopirén and a continuation south are different journeys, each needing its own dates and reservations.

Without a vehicle, arrange a through service or every shore transfer explicitly, including the Leptepu–Fiordo Largo connection if used. This driving sequence does not establish a bus timetable or a walk-on passenger transfer.

Route and access information

Use the current operator instructions

Operator terms and protected-area information checked on 15 October 2026. Somarco's page contains direct and bimodal descriptions alongside older timetable blocks, so no departure time is promised here. Trail directories supply context; CONAF and conditions determine actual access.

Where the road goes next

Continue with time to spare

Chaitén can close a satisfying northern journey or begin a longer route south. Add the next landscape only when you can also add its nights, transport and return. The fiords and forest already give these six days a distinct shape.
