Chile with Children

Choose a base where an ordinary afternoon works, give long journeys their own day, and let each child help shape the adventure. A lake walk, a museum and a carefully chosen wildlife outing can make a generous family trip.

A trip everyone can enjoy

Plan for the youngest traveller and the keenest one

A child who loves boats may tire quickly of long drives; a teenager may want a demanding activity and a quiet morning afterwards. Begin with the family's actual interests and routines. Choose two or three experiences you care about, then give them a base, a workable journey and enough free time around them. These age groups are planning suggestions; the provider decides who can join each booked activity.

  1. 01
    Under six

Keep departures simple, protect rest time and choose visits you can shorten without losing the whole day.

  2. 02
    Six to twelve

Give the outing a question or a task: look for how a watermill works, choose a museum object or identify a bird from a distance.

  3. 03
    Teenagers

Let them choose a substantial part of the trip. Match adventure bookings to the exact operator's age, equipment and participation requirements.

Stay long enough to settle

Make Puerto Varas one base with several different days

A central Puerto Varas stay gives the family a town afternoon between a Frutillar cultural day and a separate eastern outing with confirmed access. The Lake Llanquihue family story shows how to swap days with the weather. Hotel Bellavista's triple-room page listed three beds and a maximum of three people when checked on 13 October 2026. In Frutillar, Teatro del Lago describes guided visits averaging 45 minutes and lists under-tens as free.

  1. 01
A room for your actual party

A room label does not establish space for an extra child. Send the hotel everyone's ages and request the exact bed arrangement, cot availability and total price.

  2. 02
A rain plan with a purpose

Confirm a place for every person and the day's departures at Teatro del Lago. The visit needs to suit the child's attention as well as the family budget.

The whole journey

Count the steps between rooms

Compare the full accommodation-to-accommodation day, including airport transfers, ferry queues and onward roads. For El Tepual, the airport transport page distinguishes transfers to Plaza Puerto Varas or an address from a bus to Puerto Montt's terminal. For Chiloé, use the ferry guide to plan both directions through Pargua–Chacao, including the mainland and island roads.

  1. 01
    Arrange the vehicle before arrival

Give the provider each child's age, height and weight and ask which child restraint and vehicle will be supplied. Confirm the fit, installation and luggage space for the booked service. A child fare or a family transfer label does not answer those questions.

  2. 02
    Let arrival be enough

Keep food, a change of clothes and the first evening close to the room. Give the journey to Chiloé its own time before adding an island outing.

Age, interest and the actual activity

Offer a choice that can really be booked

Younger children may enjoy a short waterfront outing or one museum building; older children can follow a question through a longer visit. Teenagers might choose music, photography or adventure. The Santiago guide adds cultural city days. Ruténica's Petrohué rafting page listed a minimum age of 12 when checked on 13 October 2026. The penguin family story considers boats, waiting and wildlife expectations.

  1. 01
    Treat minimum ages as provider-specific

Confirm current conditions, equipment fit and the child's participation before paying. Ruténica's minimum age applies to that product, not every river excursion.

  2. 02
    Give different interests room

Agree accompanying adults, meeting place and return when interests differ. Give non-participants a complete nearby outing.

Before booking

Settle the details that change a family day

Write the plan for the actual children travelling, including their dates of birth and what they enjoy. Use those details consistently across the room, vehicle and activity bookings.

01

Sleep and meals

Ask for the room arrangement in writing

Confirm beds, room occupancy, a cot if needed, stairs and access to food at the hours you expect to use them. Check whether a kitchen, laundry or separate sleeping area is part of the booked unit. Discuss dietary requirements directly with accommodation and meal providers.

02

Health and documents

Prepare for this family's route

Use the entry requirements guide for the official document sources, especially when a child travels with one parent or another adult. Discuss individual health questions with a clinician before remote or high-altitude outings; the altitude guide explains that separate planning decision.

03

A flexible afternoon

Keep one option close to the room

After a longer excursion, leave time for a meal, a game or a familiar walk. Keep the next morning flexible if the family needs rest. A seven-day Lakes and Volcanoes route is a framework to shorten or slow down around your available nights.

Family planning sources

Check the specific room and activity

Choose the trip's shape

Give the family time to enjoy a place

Start with the places you most want to share, then keep enough nights to have an ordinary day in each. A favourite waterfront, a comfortable room and an outing chosen by the children can become the parts everyone remembers.
