Across the Andes

Crossing between Chile and Argentina

A border journey can connect a Santiago stay with Mendoza, two lake districts or a wider Patagonia trip. Plan the crossing as a travel day of its own, with the documents, vehicle permission and next room settled before you leave.

One crossing, several checks

Choose the connection before buying the next leg

Write down the towns on either side, the named pass and how you will reach your accommodation after the border. A scheduled international bus, a rental car and your own vehicle involve different preparations. Start with the journey you actually want; a line across a map does not tell you whether the road, rental agreement or departure will work for your dates.

  1. 01
    Name the whole route

Record the outward crossing and any return to Chile. Include the time spent reaching and leaving the control complex, then plan the onward night.

  2. 02
    Choose who handles the driving

An international bus leaves the vehicle arrangements to the operator. You still need your own valid travel documents and must follow passenger and baggage procedures.

  3. 03
    Protect the onward booking

Keep a changeable night around the crossing and avoid tying it to a same-day flight or an expensive activity that cannot move.

Passenger documents

Check entry for each traveler in both directions

Use Chile's consular visa table and Argentina's consular visa guidance for your nationality, document and purpose. A valid stay in one country does not establish eligibility for the other. Read identity-card exceptions carefully; they do not extend to every foreign visitor traveling from Chile.

  1. 01
Carry the travel file within reach

Keep the original eligible document, any issued visa and the required accommodation, funds and onward-travel evidence accessible. Prepare health-insurance evidence for Argentina and confirm the applicable entry declaration with its consulate or Migraciones.

  2. 02
Include the return and the children

Check that your authorization covers the intended entries, and retain Chile's arrival record. For children, establish the required proof of relationship and consent for the actual accompanying adults; a family surname alone does not settle the question.

Rental and private vehicles

Prepare the vehicle

Tell the rental company the countries, dates, drivers and passes before paying. Chilean Customs has a specific temporary-exit/admission procedure for rentals traveling to Argentina; Argentine ARCA guidance likewise requires rental authorization and an eligible company and crossing. Obtain the provider's confirmation and the actual border paperwork before setting off.

  1. 01
Match the papers to the car

Check registration details, authorized drivers, driving documents, insurance valid across the border and the temporary-admission record. For a borrowed or privately owned vehicle, ask Customs which ownership or owner-authorization evidence applies to your residence and registration country.

  2. 02
Agree the return and a breakdown plan

Confirm where the car must be returned, the permit's deadline and who assists if it cannot be driven back. Get instructions from the company and Customs before leaving a vehicle abroad; a flight home does not close its customs record.

Central Chile, the lakes and Patagonia

Build a journey around the pass that fits your trip

For Santiago–Mendoza, investigate the Los Libertadores / Cristo Redentor system. For the Osorno–Villa La Angostura corridor, investigate Cardenal Antonio Samoré. Around Puerto Natales, confirm whether your operator or road plan uses Dorotea or another authorized crossing. Consult Chile's border authority and Argentina's crossing information for the actual pass; a distant open crossing can add far more travel than a map suggests.

  1. 01
    Read both countries' dated notices

Check both countries' crossing information again before leaving. Read the direction, vehicle category, approach restrictions and local time as well as the opening headline.

  2. 02
    Keep the evening flexible

Confirm the bus's exact terminal and cancellation arrangements, or the driving route's fuel and overnight stops. A change in weather can outlast a short connection buffer. If the pass closes, stay in a serviced town while you arrange the next feasible departure.

Before and during the crossing

Keep the essentials easy to find

The most useful preparation is a small, accessible travel file and a day with enough room to finish the formalities.

01

Food and baggage

Look through every bag and the vehicle

For entry to Chile, SAG requires declaring plant and animal products, including items in the vehicle. An inspector decides admission. For Argentina, read SENASA's traveler guidance before packing food. Check snacks, picnic supplies and souvenirs; packaging or a small quantity does not settle permission.

02

At the control

Finish the procedures before continuing

Follow staff instructions for immigration, customs and agricultural inspection, including any requirement to leave a bus or present bags. Keep personal and vehicle records together, check the details and allowed dates, and ask staff about an unclear or missing record before driving away.

03

After arrival

Plan the first ordinary needs

Save the next accommodation's address and arrival instructions offline. Confirm local time with the operator, carry water and accessible layers, and arrange usable payment and phone access on the other side. Before the return, repeat the crossing and document checks rather than relying on the outward journey.

A worthwhile connection

Give the other side time of its own

Cross when the places beyond the border deserve the journey. A settled stay on either side makes more of the effort than a hurried detour followed by the same formalities in reverse. Once the crossing is arranged, let the next day begin with the town, lake or landscape you came to see.
